Boxing Returns To The Centre
Leigh Park Amateur Boxing Club have returned to the Leigh Park Community Centre.
Having spent nearly £30,000 on a refurbishment and several months of hard work the new boxing gym opened on Monday 7th January 2013.
The club had originally been based at the Community Centre for over 30 years, but needing larger premises they relocated in April 2011 to a unit in West Leigh.
Successful in a bid for funding from ‘Sport England’, and with the support from Mark Johnson the Community Centre’s Chair, the club agreed a lease on space within the centre and work began in March 2012 to create a modern, fit for purpose, boxing gym, and work was finally completed in December.
The new gym was officially opened by local athlete Tony Oakey, a former British, Commonwealth, WBU Light Heavyweight Boxing Champion and former member of the Leigh Park Amateur Boxing Club. Tony won two national senior championships and represented England on a number of occasions whilst a member of the club, and then went on to achieve great success as a professional boxer.
The opening event was attended by a large group of people offering their support to the club. Peter Vince, Boxing Club Secretary, said “we are pleased to return to the Community Centre, the real home of Leigh Park Amateur Boxing Club, and we are very proud of our new boxing gym which is one of the best in the area. We could not have achieved this without the support of a great number of people, for which everyone at the club is very grateful”.
The boxing club is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings. £2.00 per session, and for new members there is a one off £10.00 joining fee.
